What is Malware?

Malware is a general term for any program that causes unwanted effects on your computer. Generally, viruses, worms and trojans are all considered malware.  When it is unclear if a program is a virus or a worm, it can still be referred to it as a piece of malware.

It is important that you control any software that is installed on your computer. Malware is seldom intentionally installed but usually self-installs and modifies other software on your computer without your knowledge. Malware affects a system by occupying disk drive space, consuming CPU cycles and RAM that slows down or negatively alters the performance of your computer. Certain categories of malware can also be destructive and make your computer unusable. The typical types of malware are viruses, worms, trojans, adware, spyware, Phishing and spam
